Music

Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

About the subject

We do not offer music as a curriculum subject at Kickstart. However, we do see the value of creative arts in enhancing the learning experiences of our students, developing their cultural capital and providing a therapeutic outlet for our young people.

During the students’ welcome meetings we discuss the music lessons that we offer.  We display in our academy building the music opportunities that are available to students throughout the year.

Students can have weekly music lessons with an instrument of their choice.  This includes drums, guitar, brass, or vocal lessons. We do offer a taster lesson first if students are unsure about the instrument they select.

Lessons are open to all students currently at Kickstart, including those having free lessons under our free school meal / child in care offer and students where the school are covering the cost of lessons via their pupil premium funding.

Research suggests that music helps to develop fundamental skills of Expressive Arts and embed challenge, metacognition, memory techniques and literacy into our wider educational offer.  The music teachers who support Kickstart work closely with academy staff to ensure the lessons are scaffolded to ensure the needs of disadvantaged young learners and those with SEND make progress towards being knowledgeable in Music.
