About the subject

Careers and Employability is a planned entitlement that helps every student understand the opportunities available to them and take practical steps towards a suitable post-16 destination. The programme is linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks and responds to each student’s needs, interests and circumstances.

Qualifications and assessment

Careers and Employability is a statutory curriculum entitlement rather than a qualification.

About the Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

Intent

Raise aspirations while providing realistic and well-informed guidance.
Help students understand local and national education, training and employment pathways.
Provide encounters with employers, workplaces, colleges and training providers.
Develop employability skills, applications, CVs, interview preparation and transition confidence.
Support every student to identify and work towards an appropriate positive post-16 destination.

Implementation

Careers learning is delivered through planned sessions, subject links, visits, employer encounters, work experience and individual guidance.
Kickstart works extensively with Future Focus to support pathway exploration, applications, interviews, provider contact and transition.
Students’ intended destinations and required actions are reviewed regularly.
Families and relevant professionals are involved where this supports a successful transition.

Impact

Students understand a wider range of pathways and can explain their next steps.
Students complete applications and participate in appropriate provider or employer encounters.
Students develop the confidence and practical skills needed for transition.
Intended and sustained destinations are monitored and used to evaluate the programme.

Enrichment

Employer encounters, workplace experiences, work-experience placements, college and training-provider visits, guest speakers, apprenticeship information and practical application support.

Careers

Kickstart works extensively with Future Focus to support every student in identifying, applying for and transitioning towards an appropriate positive post-16 destination. Support may include individual guidance, college and training-provider applications, CVs, interview preparation, visits, liaison with families and providers, and additional action where a destination is at risk.
