Curriculum

Personal Development

Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

About the subject

Personal Development equips students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to stay safe, form healthy relationships, participate in society and prepare for independent adulthood. The programme reflects students’ age, context and emerging needs.

Qualifications and assessment

Personal Development is a statutory curriculum entitlement rather than a standalone qualification. It includes relevant relationships, health, citizenship, safeguarding and preparation-for-adulthood content.

About the Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

Intent

  • Develop healthy, respectful relationships and understanding of consent.
  • Strengthen knowledge of physical health, mental wellbeing and risk.
  • Teach safeguarding, online safety, exploitation awareness and how to seek help.
  • Develop financial capability, citizenship and preparation for adulthood.
  • Promote respect for protected characteristics, equality and inclusion.

Implementation

  • Content is sequenced across the year and revisited where reinforcement is needed.
  • Teaching uses discussion, scenarios, practical tasks, current issues and external expertise.
  • Staff create a safe climate for questions while maintaining clear safeguarding boundaries.
  • Learning links directly to academy expectations and students’ real-life experiences.

Impact

  • Students can explain key knowledge and apply it to realistic situations.
  • Students know how and where to report concerns and seek support.
  • Students demonstrate increasingly safe, respectful and informed decision-making.
  • Impact is monitored through assessment, student voice, safeguarding themes and wider behaviour.

Enrichment

Opportunities may include external speakers, workshops, cultural visits, community projects, financial education and practical preparation-for-adulthood activities.

Careers

Careers learning in this subject contributes to Kickstart’s wider careers programme and the Gatsby Benchmarks. Through our work with Future Focus, students receive individual support to explore suitable pathways, make applications and prepare for a positive post-16 transition. Personal Development supports employability through communication, reliability, financial awareness, respectful behaviour, teamwork and informed decision-making.
