About the subject

Digital Skills prepares students to use technology safely, confidently and effectively in education, employment and everyday life. Learning focuses on practical competence, digital responsibility and the skills expected in modern workplaces.

Qualifications and assessment

Students work towards the academy’s current Digital Skills qualification.

Intent

Create, edit and present digital information effectively.
Use documents, presentations, spreadsheets and online tools appropriately.
Develop safe, responsible and respectful online behaviour.
Understand privacy, passwords, digital footprints, misinformation and online risk.
Build skills that support employment, further education and independent adulthood.

Implementation

Learning is planned from students’ assessed starting points and reviewed as they make progress.
Lessons follow Kickstart’s lesson pathway: Learning Intention, Remember, Learn, Practise and Review.
Teachers use adaptive teaching, modelling, scaffolding, retrieval and regular checking for understanding.
Literacy, vocabulary and communication are taught explicitly within the subject.
Assessment information is used to address gaps, adjust teaching and make qualification-entry decisions.
Students complete practical tasks using realistic workplace and everyday-life scenarios.

Impact

Students build knowledge and skills from their individual starting points.
Work, assessment evidence and student voice demonstrate increasing confidence and independence.
Students are prepared appropriately for accredited assessment and their next stage of education, employment or training.
Progress is considered alongside engagement, attendance, resilience and readiness to learn.

Enrichment

Opportunities may include project work, online-safety activities, employer-linked tasks, CV creation, digital applications and practical use of spreadsheets and presentations.

Careers

Careers learning in this subject contributes to Kickstart’s wider careers programme and the Gatsby Benchmarks. Through our work with Future Focus, students receive individual support to explore suitable pathways, make applications and prepare for a positive post-16 transition. Digital competence supports almost every employment sector and is particularly relevant to administration, business, retail, creative media, IT support, hospitality, logistics and customer service.
