About the subject

Cultural Education broadens students’ experience of the wider world and develops the knowledge needed to participate thoughtfully in modern Britain. Visits and curriculum activities are deliberately linked to British Values and wider personal development.

Cultural Education and British Values is a curriculum entitlement rather than a standalone qualification.

Intent

Increase cultural knowledge, curiosity and confidence in unfamiliar settings.
Develop understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.
Help students discuss different beliefs, cultures and perspectives respectfully.
Connect classroom learning to places, institutions, history and community life.
Develop safe, responsible and informed participation in society.

Implementation

Students take part in planned cultural learning and visits linked to clear curriculum aims.
British Values are taught explicitly and revisited through discussion, reflection and student feedback.
Staff prepare students before visits and help them connect experiences to prior and future learning.
Safeguarding, behaviour and accessibility are considered carefully when activities are planned.

Impact

Students can explain the relevance of British Values to real situations.
Students demonstrate increased cultural awareness and confidence.
Feedback and discussion show that students can reflect on visits and make meaningful connections.
Participation supports wider engagement, belonging and preparation for adulthood.

Enrichment

Planned cultural visits, museums, heritage sites, public institutions, community organisations, current-affairs activities and visiting speakers.

Careers

Careers learning in this subject contributes to Kickstart’s wider careers programme and the Gatsby Benchmarks. Through our work with Future Focus, students receive individual support to explore suitable pathways, make applications and prepare for a positive post-16 transition. Cultural awareness, respectful communication and confidence in different environments are valuable across all education, training and employment settings.
